Sorrowful Mysteries
Intention: Sorrow for our sins
1. On the eve of His Passion Jesus gave us the sacrament of His Body and Blood
2. He also gave His New Commandment: "to love one another", to be recognized as His disciples now and on Judgement's day
3. Jesus then prayed to the Father: "that all His believers be one"
4. At the Garden Jesus said: My soul is filled with sorrow even unto death
5. Jesus fell to the ground and prayed: Father, if possible, take away this cup from Me but not My will but Your will be done
6. In this utter anxiety, Jesus blood dripped down like sweat and an Angel came to strengthen Him
7. Obeying the will of His Father, Jesus accepted the cup of His Passion
8. Waking up His Apostles, Jesus said watch and pray to overcome temptation
9. Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss and the people He loved seized Him
10. They cruelly bound Jesus and led Him from one judge to another
2nd Mystery: the Scourging of Jesus
Intention: Bridling our Passions
1. Having decided on Jesus' death the Jews turned Him over the Romans
2. They falsely accused Jesus before Pontius Pilate
3. Given a choice they shouted to free Barrabas, but to do away with Jesus
4. Even after declaring Jesus innocent Pilate had Him scourged
5. The soldiers rudely stripped Jesus of His clothes
6. Jesus suffered this ignominy to atone for our sins of immodesty
7. Jesus. meek as a lamb, was tied to a pillar
8. Jesus endured this dreadful scourging to expiate man's immoral conduct
9. As Isaiah prophesied: the man of sorrows was all wounds but we were healed by His Blood
10. Jesus. You suffered all this for our sins, make us see, once and for all, the evil of sin
3rd Mystery: Jesus Crowned with Thorns
Intention: Forbearance of contempt
1. The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown for Jesus
2. In cruel mockery they pressed it tight on Jesus' head
3. The sharp thorns pierced the head of Jesus all around
4. Blood streamed down the Holy Face
5. To mock His Kingship they threw a purple cloak around Jesus' shoulders
6. The soldiers put a reed in the hand of Jesus as sceptre
7. Then they took the reed to strike the thorn-crowned head of Jesus
8. They slapped Jesus and spat in His Face saying: hail to this King!
9. Jesus our Lord took these ignominies to cure us pf pride and vanity
10. When Pilate brought out Jesus so cruelly disfigured and said: See the Man. His enemies shouted: Crucify Him!
4th Mystery: Jesus Carries His Cross
Intention:
1. Pilate, against his conscience, condemned Jesus to be crucified
2. Jesus welcomes His cross as the instrument of our salvation
3. Jesus carried His cross on his wounded shoulders
4. Jesus was led to Calvary between two criminals as Isaiah prophesied
5. Jesus, carrying His Cross, met His sorrowful Mother
6. Weighed down by our sins, Jesus repeatedly fell down under His cross
7. Seeing Jesus exhausted, the soldiers forced Simon to carry the cross
8 Many pious women of Jerusalem mourned and lamented for Jesus
9. Jesus turned to them saying: Do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and your children
10. Completely exhausted, Jesus dragged His Cross up to Mount Calvary
5th Mystery: Jesus Dies on the Cross
Intention: Forgiving all offenses
1. The soldiers rudely pulled Jesus down and stretched Him out on the cross
2. They pierced His hands and feet with nails while Jesus prayed for them
3. Jesus prayed: Father, forgive them for they know not what they do!
4. Raising the cross tore open His wounds. Who can sense the sufferings of My Lord!
5. To the repentant thief Jesus said: Today you will be with Me in Paradise
6. When Jesus said I thirst they gave Him vinegar to drink
7. Jesus cried out in anguish: My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me
8. From the Cross Jesus entrusted His disciple John-- and all of us---to His Mother
9. Having emptied His cup for our Salvation, Jesus said: It is accomplished
10. Jesus then said in a loud voice: Father into your hands I commend My Spirit, and expired.
So much indeed did God loved men as not to spare His Only Son, but gave Him up to die for all, even to die on the cross (said after each sorrowful mystery}
